OUR TRAINING PAGE

We are often asked if we offer training for those new to archery or who just want to give it a try, and we generally run initial training courses throughout the summer months. Places are limited so it is a question of first come first served, places are only reserved on payment of a fee and written confirmation that you are allocated a place. To assist you, we have listed the dates and number of places available on courses for 2010. Courses are open to a wide range of people, any age over twelve, but children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian whilst on club premises. Peope with long hair, earrings or baggy clothes are advised that for safety reasons these should be tied back, or removed prior to shooting.

Courses are generally run over three consecutive Sundays commencing at 12 noon until about 5 o clock, all equipment including personal protective equipment is provided, tea and coffee is also freely available during the course, but you could consider bringing some food or snacks as it can be a long day. Oh and don't forget some suntan lotion, being near the coast we do get some very warm hot days.

At the end of each session you will be given an opportunity to give feedback to the coaches about the days training and they in turn will confirm your progress to date and provide you with some paperwork to reinforce the information you were given verbally.

At the end of the three sessions, providing you have been making reasonable progress and putting into practice all you have been taught, you will receive a certificate of achievement that will generally be accepted by other clubs to show that you have undergone basic training and are safe to carry on developing your skills in the sport of target archery.

HOW TO JOIN

Take a look at the list of course dates on offer, and only sign up if you can make all three consecutive dates, no refunds or certificates will be offered if you fail to attend one of your sessions. When you have decided which course is for you, download and complete the application form and send it along with your fee of fifty pounds to the address at the bottom of this page. You will then receive a confirmatory letter to confirm your place on the requested course

EQUIPMENT

During your training course you will be given sufficient equipment to begin shooting archery at a reasonable level and over a short distance, but over time, you will want to develop your skills and obtain more sophisticated equipment, but beware! this will not necessarily make you a better archer. Take advice from the club coaches and look at the equipment other club members are using, you will soon get a good idea at how much you want to spend and what to spend it on. Some local sports shops appear to sell archery equipment, but be careful, this can often not be the best in quality or value, and prices can be high. There are a number of specialist archery shops in the North West, ask around the club as often members will have used equipment to sell either as individual items or complete kits.

The amount and type of equipment required to commence archery can range from simplistic and cheap to expensive and possibly overdone.

Any good retail archery shop will provide you with a beginners set at a realistic price, but the best method may be to call at your local archery club and see if they run training courses and provide equipment.

This will let you start the process, and then as your skill develops, and probably your physique as well, you will be able to upgrade to bigger and better equipment. Local clubs can be found on the Grand National Archery Society website (G.N.A.S.) see our links below to be re-directed.

A number of archery suppliers can be found online, as an example you can look up Quicks, Archery World, BowSport, BowPlus and Pip Bickerstaffe and Richard Head (both of whom are Bowyer / Longbow specialists).
