FUTURE EVENTS

Please note that we are holding our first Postal League Shoot this Sunday 15th November at Crosby Leisure Centre. The Postal League was held many years ago and was very successful in offering clubs a chance to compete against one another in a fairly low cost way without the inconvenience of travel and expense.

It has been ressurected by a group of volunteers and details can be found on their website *British Archers Postal League.com* Go to this website and see the list of clubs participating, it is huge.... Be part of it, come down to the club and see if you can submit one of the higher scores to help your club prosper and win a prize.

In principle there is a desginated day of the shoot, Sunday 15th November, and this is repeated every month, we as a club submit the five top scores from those club members participating, these scores go into a league based on a weighted average, if you consistently score more than the average, you will move up to a higher league and so on, there are also divisions as a large number of clubs have responded and shown an interest, so we will be competing against some of our local clubs as well.

There are two types of round, a Portsmouth round shot indoors, which is 5 dozen arrows at 20 yards, or a "Frostbite round" three dozen arrows shot outdoors at thirty yards, Brrr...

At the end of the season, prizes (medal brooches) will be awarded to the six highest scoring teams in each division, one prize for each Lady, Gent, boy or girl with the hihest single score in each league, and the "Crisp Trophy" will be awarded to the highest unadjusted score in the Frostbite League, and finally the British Archer Trophy will go the highest unadjusted score for those shooting the Portsmouth Round.

Any club member can enter and shoot, but only the highest five scores will be submitted each month, this means everyone has a chance to participate in November through to March, and possibly own one sixth of a medal!!!

Please make your interest known to likeable Dave Young, or Jim Kavanagh.

Happy Shooting

Indoor Season 2009/10 We look forward to receiving ideas from current club members as to possible future outings, both for our indoor winter season and the forthcoming summer outdoor 2010 season.

We may want to hold another celebratory Christmas meal at a local pub or restaurant, thankfully, a Fairtytale of New York, with Kirsty McColl and Shane McGowan will not be seen or heard... But all other ideas will be considered

PAST EVENTS

2009 BSA Club Clout and Outdoor Handicap Shoots, despite the lack of one or two trophies not returned by previous winers, we are pleased to announce that both recent club competitions were an outstanding success. Most notable was the winner of the Eddie Cantrell Memorial Clout Trophy which was won by young Sam Stephens, who had never shot clout before this day... Recent awards night presentation

A recent awards night attended by club members.

Sunday 23rd August 2009 We welcomed Pip Bickerstaffe a respected bowyer from Derbyshire, his speciality is the making of English Long Bows, shooting them, and their associated history. He was an entertaining and very interesting speaker revealing many insights into the alleged poundage of long bows from the likes of the Mary Rose. Pip also gave us a detailed demonstration and talk on shooting, not the T Draw favoured by GNAS, but the old style V draw, which use more muscles and is alleged to cause less problems for archers, who can suffer tennis elbow and shoulder problems.
If you missed this event and would like a flavour of what Pip is all about, please visit *www.Bickerstaffe Bows Co UK*

Pip Bickerstaffe talking at Blundellsands Archers

Many thanks to all those who helped set up and attend this event, the donations of cakes and biscuits is extremely generous, and the kindness of Shaaron in providing cream teas for all involved was very much appreciated, including Pip Bickertstaffe and his wife.

Saturday8th August Bodelwyddan Castle in North Wales was the rural venue for a Medieval Festival, this trip was a great success, please see some of the photos on our photo page. There were Arena Events, Living History Camps, Falconry, Combat Displays, Exotic Dancers, and a Battle!!!
We went back through time, to the Middle Ages! and asked many question to all the participants, what amazed us was how many people were involved and took part in the event. Each person we asked gave us a full breakdown of the roles and conditions they lived and worked under at the time. It was taditional medieval Festival, complete with Medieval Traders and Craftsmen, plus various bands of rough soldiery and noble household retinues on campaign in the long and bloody struggles between England and Wales briefly taking their ease and honing their skills.
Archery was of the most interest to us, but some of the boys did take a shine to the leather work, and the wench who served there...Archers were from all parts of the country with a big contingent from Stockport, we do have the name of the organisers, so if you fancy dressing up, you could take part next year. At the end of the ay culminated in a very nasty and potentially deadly Battle, as the seasoned re-enactors created for your enjoyment and wonder the noise and spectacle of a clash of arms from this violent and colourful period.

Sunday 2nd Agust 2009 We welcomed another nine beginners to our club for the duration of the three week course, Carl Williams, Ian Bolton, Richard Guttridge, Phil Gordon, Andrew Keher, John and Victoria Metcalfe, Nick Taylor, and finally Simon Wilde, who was a recent participant on the DRO have a go session. Lets make them all feel welcome to our Club.

Thursday 30th July A visit by thirteen children from Bellarussia who are sadly long term victims of the Chernobyl incident were welcomed to the field today to have a go of archery, and to enjoy our hospitality. They came about six o clock with a number of helpers, interprators, and even their own Doctor, and like most children they were both lively and noisy, after the short introductions they were given the weapons! and proceeded to attack the targets, their aim was quite good considering their ages, then we discovered that they had a taster of archery in North wales at the start of the week.
After a short session we broke off for refreshments, and its amazing how much pleasure these children get when tucking into mounds of cakes, biscuits and chocolates, one of the clubs big kid, Frank, started off a craze of layering squirty cream onto Jaffa cakes.. sacrilege I hear some say, the children loved it... Then we returned to shooting, but we had placed balloons all over the three target faces, the look of determination on the childrens faces to burst them there balloons. Many thanks to the crew who helped.
As a token of thanks, several gifts were left behind, and the card of thanks is reproduced here. Great teamwork again crew. Many thanks.

Sunday 26th July 2009 Following on from two previous corporate hospitality events, HFS for Sid Stephens, and Denholm Rees O'Donnel for Dave McDonald, Tony Roberts and Jeff McVey.

We were pleased to welcome members of the Mazda MX5 owners Club for a have a go session, this was a great success entertaining twenty one of their members and guests. Hot food was laid on, which was gratefully received as the weather itself was not too hot!
Many thanks to Jim Kavanagh, Shaaron Moon, Steve Blenkinsop, Dave Young, and Jeff McVey for helping on the day.

The next World Firefighter Games 2010 are being held in Korea, a country which has archery as its national sport, so the emphasis is likely to be on them winning medals in this sport more than any other. It was interesting to note that last year in Liverpool, although they had a large group of entrants, archery was not entered by any team members, which leads us to believe that they will sweep the board when it is held in their own host country. Lets wait and see shall we?

OUR HISTORY PAGE

The Bow and Arrow was the first mechanical weapon used by man. In its ancient past, archery was a means of survival, aggression, or defence. But today, it has become a universally enjoyed sport, limitless in its capacity to be performed by people of all ages and abilities.

Blundellsands Archers was first established at Blundellsands under the Presidency of Colonel Blundell of Crosby Hall in 1876. They started with upwards of seventy members. Their first annual prize meeting was held on the 26th of August of that year. A note with the report says "a strong wind, varied at short intervals with showers of rain". Nothing seems to have changed with the British weather after all those years. With the exception of a few years during the 2nd World War the club has remained active in the sport of archery.

This sport can be enjoyed by a wide variety of people of all ages and abilities, but for safety reasons we normally only allow children above ten years of age, unless their parent is also a member. Under our child protection policy, parents are responsible for their children at all times. People with abilities or disabilities, are most welcome to attend and try archery at our club on one of our beginner courses.
